Hunting for Eggs and Caterpillars

Finding butterfly eggs and caterpillars is VERY exciting.  Since they're so tiny, it's important to know WHERE to look.

Each butterfly species lays its eggs on specific plants, called host plants. Caterpillars hatch out of the eggs and are all set to eat their preferred food.  So, to find eggs and caterpillars you need to know some key plants.  These plants might be be in your own garden, they might be among weeds in a vacant lot, or they might be along a trail.  Keep your eyes open!

Salt Creek Butterfly Farm plants for approx. 20 common butterfly species.  The following guides will tell you the name of the butterfly, what plant it finds its eggs on, and what they look like at every stage of development in the lifecycle.  Enjoy!
